OUR HISTORY

SSPeter & Paul Catholic parish, Oke Afa in Ejigbo LCDA had a humble beginning. The church started as a Basic Christian Community (BCC), a forum where members of the Catholic Church assemble to share words of God in March 1987 with six members who assembled at the residence of Mrs. M.A. Asenuga with a vision and determination to spread the Catholic faith and establish a more appropriate place of worship every Sunday.

As time went on, the BCC grew and began to live out the scriptures according to the Acts 2:44-47 which welfare was contributed by the community members. In view of this, a 12 member Elders’ Forum was formed to direct the activities of the church community. They were; Late Sir Paul Anaweokhai(KSJ), Mrs. M.A. Asenuga, Mrs. J.F. Adewusi, Mr. A. A. Aina, Mr. J. O. Dada, Late Pa S. B. Akinsowon, Mr. Alphonsus Egbuka, Mr. C. T. Lawal, Mrs. B. A. Sotowa, Mr. F. A. Oyekunle and Messrs Niyi Odem and Paul Adegoke. The growth of this church at this stage could be attributed to the relentless efforts and zeal of these people.

In December 1989, the first Holy Mass was celebrated under the canopy set in front Madam Asenuga’s house with 33 members in attendance. Out of this number, 13 received Holy Communion that day. The mass was celebrated by a Ghanaian priest, Rev Fr. Nyanki who visited Regina Mundi Catholic Church Mushin, the affiliate parish. He advised the members to be courageous and remain steadfast in their prayers for the continual growth of the church.

The Church got its name in 1990 during one of its regular meetings of the Committee of Elders held at Block 448 flat 6, Jakande Estate, Lagos, Nigeria. The thirteen members present on the day the name was chosen, wrote and folded names of various saints and placed them in a bag. Prayers were offered to God to take control and choose a name for the church. Thereafter, little Miss Constance Olere Egbenya (Sir Paul Anaweokhai’s granddaughter) about two and half years old was called, she dipped her hand into the bag and brought out one of the folder papers. When this paper was opened it has on it “Saints Peter and Paul”. The Church was therefore named after the two great saints.
In 1996, St. Mary’s Catholic Church Isolo became a full-fledged parish and as such, SS Peter & Paul became an outstation of the parish. The church was subsequently declared a parish on July 22nd, 2007 by His Eminence, Anthony Cardinal Okogie, the Archbishop of the Lagos metropolitan See.
